2019 Viognier/Chardonnay Central Coast This wine is 50% Viognier from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, and 50% Chardonnay from the Spanish Springs Vineyard near the Edna Valley. This Viognier is from the same block at Bien Nacido that Ive worked with for years, located behind the winery and planted on gravelly, sandy river bench soils. The Viognier clone is from Ibarra-Young, which is the same clone that we planted in Los Olivos in 1988. The Spanish Springs Vineyard is a young vineyard, planted in 2011 in the Price Canyon area bordering on Pismo Beach. It is a gently sloped, south facing vineyard about three miles from the Pacific Ocean, so a very cool climate site. This wine is made in the same style as the wine that I made since 1992 called Bien Nacido Cuve, which takes advantage of the ripe, aromatic characters of cool climate Viognier, balanced by Chardonnay picked on the low side of ripeness. The cool climate Chardonnay brings minerality, acidity and lower alcohol to the blend. Both wines were whole cluster pressed and barrel fermented, on the lees, in neutral Francois Freres French oak barrels. Both wines went through complete malolactic fermentation in the barrel which adds richness and complexity. Six barrels, about 140 cases, were bottled in April 2020. This is a wine meant to be consumed while its young and fresh. The Viognier gives the wine aromatics of honeysuckle, apricots and lychee, while the Chardonnay adds citrus, green pear, minerality and fresh acidity.
