Super dark in color, the contributions of Petite Sirah and Syrah are immediately
evident. Aromas of ripe red and black fruit marry with a hint
of cedar. On the palate this ripe rich red blend is amazingly lively the
weight of the Rhne varieties balanced perfectly by the mid-palate of
our classic Merlot. A bit of Charbono completes the dance! Having
just enough grip in the finish makes this a very approachable, versatile,
food-friendly red wine.
Like its namesake, this Griffin is a powerful combination of strengths.
This years blend is 44% Merlot, 40% Petite Sirah, 14% Syrah, and 2%
Charbono.
The Griffin on the Foley family crest in Irish heraldry combines the
strengths of the lion, king of beasts, with the eagle, king of the skies. A
winemakers dream is to be artistically free to combine characters into
wine that is purely hedonic and non-compliant with varietal regulations,
so The Griffins blend changes with every vintage.
The Winemaker: Bob Foley began his wine making career in the Napa Valley in 1977, working at a number of highly regarded Napa Valley wineries including the famous Pride Mountain Vineyards, where he spent 15 years as founding wine maker. During this period he also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines.
